Google is introducing a feature inspired by One UI 7 in Android 16, which is expected to evolve further with One UI 8. The new operating system includes a Live Updates feature, similar to the Live Notifications engine in One UI 7.
With the release of Android 16 Beta 2.1, Google Maps has been integrated into the Live Updates functionality. Notably, One UI 7’s Live Notifications already support Google Maps, allowing the app to display real-time activities directly in the Status Bar while running.
On Google Pixel devices, Google Maps Live Updates also appear in the Status Bar. This feature resembles an expanded version of the camera and microphone indicators but with dynamic color rendering, interactive icons, and elements.
In One UI 7, the Google Maps pill in the Status Bar is slightly larger compared to Android 16. While it is less dynamic than Android 16’s implementation, it includes a solid black background alongside text and overlay elements. Tapping on the Status Bar pill expands the Live Notification, offering a larger view similar to the iPhone’s Dynamic Island. This functionality is also supported in Android 16.
Google Maps are more refined
The Live Notifications for Google Maps are more refined in One UI 7, which is based on Android 15. The upcoming version of One UI is expected to bring further enhancements. With the release of One UI 8, Samsung is likely to advance the Live Notifications feature further, leveraging the capabilities of Android 16.
Even without direct support from Android, Samsung has developed a robust Live Notifications system. One UI 8, based on Android 16, is expected to deliver significant improvements and increased interactivity in the next iteration of the OS.
Samsung has recently announced its official rollout plan for One UI 7. The distribution will begin in April, initially targeting devices enrolled in the Beta program. The rollout is expected to last at least two months, considering the diverse range of devices and lineups.
