Google is transitioning more Assistant actions into Gemini-powered Extensions on Android phones. Previously, tasks like sending a WhatsApp message or text via Google Messages relied on Google Assistant, but now, Gemini Extensions will handle these actions directly. The AI will also learn your preferences for certain tasks over time.
In the Google app beta (v15.40.31.29), new Gemini Extensions have been activated, according to Androideo contributor Assemble Debug. A screenshot shows how Gemini activity will be used to manage tasks like choosing contacts. To use these new Extensions, you must turn on Gemini Apps Activity.
Assistant actions Gemini Learns Your Preferences
Soon, Gemini will also learn which Extension you prefer for messaging and calling specific contacts. Users will have control over these settings, allowing them to choose a different Extension or turn off any they don’t need.
New Extensions for WhatsApp, Google Messages, and Spotify
Extensions for WhatsApp, Google Messages, and Spotify have been discovered. Now, Gemini powers WhatsApp for sending messages and making calls. Unlike the current setup, Gemini can directly open WhatsApp when you modify a message. The Google Messages Extension works similarly, though it can only send messages for now, not read them.
The Spotify Extension works like the YouTube Music Extension, supporting both free and premium Spotify users. Once enabled, Gemini can play a song on Spotify, showing a thumbnail that takes you directly to the app when tapped.
Set up the Google Gemini API trigger to run a workflow that integrates with the Spotify API. Pipedream’s integration platform allows you to integrate Google Gemini and Spotify remarkably fast.
Although these features are not yet widely available, they were enabled by tweaking the Google app beta. Stay tuned for updates when they roll out to all users.
